Jumping from the gates only fairly, jockey Chad Schofield was forced to settle the Reset gelding off the pace of the race’s early leaders who set a noticeably quick tempo away from the barriers over the back straight at Werribee.

Finding the final straight wide and with plenty to do, Cadillac Mountain appeared to be out of contention until quickly spooling up and exploding from the main pack; finding runaway leader Khutulun with 100m to run and maintaining over the line; a spirited Phantom Brew running on for third.

Schofield delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Cadillac Mountain for success in the 2014 Werribee Cup and was quick to lay the praise on his classy partner’s impressive staying efforts.

“I tried to get off the fence approaching the post the first time,” Schofield said after the race.

“Barrier 1 was the worst possible draw I could have hoped for but that’s what we got and eventually pushed off the fence and was in it three-wide blind with cover.

“Once I got him out and rolling and wound up he just kept coming to the line – it was a strong staying performance.

“I was a long way off them so I wasn’t confident, but I knew my horse would just keep building through his gears and keep coming and I knew they ran a really quick tempo so they were always going to come back somewhat.”

Stable representative for trainer Peter Moody, Stephanie Lane was understandably pleased with Cadillac Mountain’s performance in the 2014 Werribee Cup and revealed she was particularly impressed with his ability to overcome the rails draw.

“It was a great run today – we were a bit worried drawing the one alley what was going to happen from there,” Lane said.

“If he was going to get held-up and stuck but he got him out and probably got out further from home than we would have anticipated.

“He came out with a long, sustained run and he’s got the money good.”

In claiming the 2014 Werribee Cup, Cadillac Mountain has now secured a commendable total of three race wins and a further two minor places from just 13 competitive appearances on course.
