December 8th, 2015

Sonntag was unable to make anything of a competitive impact through his first four starts upon resuming this time, but clearly relished a month between runs when capping a strong staying performance with a good sprint for third amongst talented company last start.

Having initially outlined the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day as his next point of call, Dwyer told AAP he is confident the Teofilo gelding’s class will count for a lot in the 2015 Werribee Cup.

“I was keen to go into the Bagot off a five-week break and keep him nice and fresh for New Year’s Day,” Dwyer said.

“The Werribee Cup is looking like being fairly weak with the exception of Tall Ship and generally I don’t skip a race because of one horse.

“If he has a good week for the rest of the week, we’ll probably run him on Sunday.”

Dwyer revealed Sonntag will then head to the Bagot Handicap before a likely trip to New Zealand for a couple of headlines staying races.

“The 2800 to 3200 (metres) is his distance range now,” Dwyer said.

“After the Bagot he’ll probably go to New Zealand for the Wellington Cup on January 24 and the Auckland Cup at the start of March.”

Posting five wins and a further four minors through 22 career starts so far, Sonntag immediately found peak condition upon transferring to the care of Dwyer at the conclusion of his 2013 campaign; failing to finish outside the first three in five competitive starts through the 2014 winter, highlighted by success in the featured Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm.

The 2015 Werribee Cup final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
